ROCKINGHAM — As the buzz of Friday’s convincing win still reverberated across the practice field Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School football team took time to recognize its Players of the Week.

Putting an exclamation point on their five-game non-conference slate to start the season, the Raiders erased a fourth-quarter deficit and defeated West Forsyth High School 36-30.

Trailing by as many as nine points with 5:50 to play, Richmond scored 15 unanswered points to secure the win.

Five players were selected by the coaching staff, representing four categories — offense, defense, special teams and practice.

Chosen for their efforts this week were:

Offense: Amer Morrison (senior wide receiver)

Defense: Terande Spencer (senior linebacker)

Special Teams: Jayden Hamilton (senior kick returner)

Special Teams: Ty Covington (sophomore athlete)

Practice: Konner Gardner (junior wide receiver)

Morrison helped Richmond in the comeback victory by catching two receiving touchdowns in the second half. He finished with six receptions for 91 yards, including scoring grabs of 22 yards and 39 yards.

Spencer racked up a team-leading 12 tackles in the win, including nine solo tackles. Five of those tackles went for a loss and he added one quarterback hurry.

Hamilton, who caught three passes for 45 yards on offense, made his biggest play in the return game. He returned a kickoff from Richmond’s own one-yard line to the West Forsyth 39-yard line (60 yards), which led to Morrison’s second score on the next play.

Creating the biggest splash play of the game, Covington blocked a punt deep in West Forsyth’s zone late in the fourth quarter, which was collected by senior Preston Fann for the game-winning score in the end zone. Covington also had five carries for 87 yards and a rushing score.

Each Player of the Week was presented a t-shirt from Top Guns Strength and Performance Gym.

The Raiders (3-2) are on a bye this week. Mid-South Conference action will start Friday, Oct. 3, at Pine Forest High School (1-4) with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
