ROCKINGHAM — Hosting the only non-conference match of all of Richmond Senior High School’s sports teams this week, the boys’ tennis team welcomed Union Pines High School Tuesday.
Familiar with the Vikings from the last four years in the former Sandhills Athletic Conference, the Raiders weren’t able to return to the win column.
Richmond lost to Union Pines by a final score of 9-0.
Putting together the closest singles matches were No. 5 freshman Brian Dominguez and No. 6 senior DJ Gainey. Each player lost 2-8 to Beau Blackwood and Declan Thayer, respectively.
Two other Raiders were able to win a game against their opponent. No. 1 junior Brian Griffith and No. 4 junior Ashton Mabe both fell 1-8 in their matches with Lane McPherson and Jace McPherson.
No. 2 junior Ben Lutz and No. 3 junior Cole Lambeth both suffered shutout losses to Tucker Lloyd and Dominic Roett, respectively.
Richmond was also swept in doubles action. The No. 1 pairing of Griffith and Lambeth had the best effort, which was a 2-8 loss to Lane McPherson and Lloyd.
The Raiders (1-3, 0-2 MSC) return to the court Wednesday for a Mid-South Conference match at Overhills High School. Singles matches will start at 4 p.m.
