WAXHAW — Making a statement in its season opener Saturday, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ track and field team finished near the top of the field.
Competing in the Clash of the Carolinas, an invitational hosted by Cuthbertson High School, the Raiders finished fourth overall out of 36 teams.
Richmond and head coach John Rich participated in 12 events and totaled 34 points. Cuthbertson won the meet (79 points), followed by Westwood (56 points) and Pinecrest (44.5 points) high schools.
Of the dozen events competed in by the Raiders, seven of them yielded top-eight results, including five top-five finishes.
Senior Domonic Tillman was the team’s best individual performer. He finished second overall in the triple jump (45 feet, 9 inches) and was fourth in the high jump (6 feet, 0 inches).
Another big chunk of points was scored by Richmond’s 4x200-meter relay team, which was second in the finals heat with a time of 1:28.75. Running that event were seniors Christian Surgent, Amer Morrison and Tyrese Collins, along with sophomore Ty Covington.
Just ahead of the Raiders in the 4x200 was Ardrey Kell High School (1:28.33).
Also impressive was Richmond’s 4x100-meter relay team of Collins, Covington and seniors Jayden Hamilton and Keonta Pegues. They passed the baton in 42.03 seconds, placing third overall.
Rounding out the top-five performers was junior Elijah Ingram, who was fifth in the shot put. His best throw of the day was 48 feet, 1.75 inches.
Pegues and Covington closed out Richmond’s top performances in two sprinting events. Pegues took seventh overall in the 100-meter dash (10.74 seconds) and Covington was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.16 seconds).

The Raiders’ next meet will be a Mid-South Conference meet against Jack Britt and Overhills high schools March 18. The meet will be held at Reid Ross Classical School and start at 4:30 p.m.
