ROCKINGHAM — Returning for its second season, a weekly recognition by the Richmond Senior High School football coaching staff kicked off Monday.

Started by head coach Brad Denson during his first season as the Raiders’ head coach, the program’s “Players of the Week” celebrated five players at the end of practice.

Richmond opened its campaign Friday with a seven-point loss to non-conference Hoggard High School.

Voted on by Denson and the rest of the coaching staff, five players were recognized in five categories — offense, defense, special teams, practice and weight room.

Called up in front of the team, Week 1’s top players were:

Offense: Amer Morrison (senior wide receiver)

Defense: Demonte Martin (senior defensive tackle)

Special Teams: Keonta Pegues (senior punter/kick returner)

Practice: Adan King (junior defensive back)

Weight Room: Jason Gainey (senior defensive end)

Sponsoring the Players of the Week was Top Guns Strength and Performance Gym. Owners Rex and Jill Crouch, along with daughters Taylor and Alley, provided t-shirts to all five players.

The Raiders (0-1) host rival Scotland High School (1-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Look for a preview article later this week.
