ROCKINGHAM – The Richmond Senior High School boys track team has been producing some of the state’s best times in various events this season.
In their last Sandhills Athletic Conference meet at Hoke County High on March 28, the 4x200 meter relay team managed to produce the state’s fastest time finishing with a 1:27.90. The team consisting of Dante Miller, Jaleen Baldwin, Preston Coker and Shane Summey temporarily had their names in the state’s record book until Parkland High School’s team sprinted to a 1:27.67 time just 10 days later.
In a non-conference meet at Union Pines High School on March 31, the Sprint Medley Relay team recorded a state best time of 3:40.60 in the 1600 meter run. In a medley relay, the full distance is not divided evenly among the participating runners. In the winning run at Union Pines, Baldwin (200m), Miller (200m), Coker (400m) and Zachariah Hamilton (800m) finished nearly two and half seconds ahead of E.E. Smith High School, which took second with a time of 3:42.22.
Miller has also found a lot of success on his own. Along with helping the relay teams accumulate a dozen first-place finishes in various meets this season, he has finished in first place in the 100-meter dash in every meet that the track teams have competed in this spring. He has also bounced on and off of the list of the state’s best times in the event throughout the season.
Overall, the Raiders team struggled to outrun their competitors from Jack Britt and Hoke Counties in their last conference meet taking third place overall in the meet. They rebounded in a big way when they won the 14-event Union Pines Viking Relay three days later. The Viking Relay featured 10 competing teams, including SAC schools Hoke County and Pinecrest.
Jack Britt invites Richmond, Scotland, and Pinecrest Thursday for the fifth SAC meet of the season. Richmond will be looking to avenge its earlier defeat to the Bucs in March.
