FOXFIRE — A busy couple of days for the Richmond Senior High School boys’ golf team continued Tuesday, and with it, a reunion on the golf course.
Following their second-place performance Monday against Mid-South Conference opponents, the Raiders returned to their home course at Foxfire Resort to host a non-conference match.
Richmond hosted Anson High School for an 18-hole friendly, which also saw the team reunited with former head coach Keith Parsons, now the head coach for the Bearcats.
In the head-to-head between the two neighboring county schools, Richmond earned the match victory with a team score of 327 (+39). That was one shot better than Richmond’s total in the MSC match the day before.
Anson, which competes in the 4A/5A Rocky River Conference, ended its round with a team score of 361 (+73). The top four lowest-scoring golfers for each team were used to calculate the team total.
“This was a fun day on the golf course,” head coach Chris Turner said. “It was great to see Coach Parsons and his kids, and great for our guys to get a chance to see him on the course.”
For the second straight match, Richmond’s entire team got the chance to swing the sticks and vie for the qualifying positions.
Senior Kevin Cosey led the team on the scorecard for the second straight outing and finished first in the field. He shot a 77 (+5), his best 18-hole score of the season.
Juniors CJ Turner and Graham Odom were second and third for Richmond, respectively, and also rounded out the top three in the field.
Turner posted an 80 (+8), which was two strokes fewer than he took during Monday’s round. Odom remained consistent with an 84 (+12), matching his score from the day earlier.
Richmond’s fourth lowest scorer was junior Grayson Robson. He ended his round with an 86 (+14), putting him in fifth overall and two shots over his score from Monday.
“I think most of my guys were a little tired from playing a full round (Monday), but they still pulled through,” Turner said. “The scores may not have shown it, but I saw a lot of improvement this week.
“There are always things we want to improve on, but today wasn’t terrible. Kevin and CJ both had triple bogeys and still shot respectable scores. Graham and Grayson left a lot of putts out there, but other than that, they played fine.”
Just missing out on qualifying for the team score for the first time this season was senior Tyler McKenzie. He posted an 87 (+15), which was also his season-low round for 18 holes.
Richmond’s other golfers, in order by how they finished, were: sophomore Drake Wallace (91), junior Max Wiggins and freshman Trent Woody (98), sophomore Owen Whitley (101), junior Eric Legrand (110) and freshman Aston Butcher (118).
“We are excited for next week,” Turner closed. “We’ll be playing at Pinehurst and that’s a great opportunity for all of our golfers.”
Richmond’s golfers will resume Mid-South Conference competition next Monday when they play an 18-hole match at Pinehurst Resort. Golfers will tee off at 2 p.m.
