Raiders win 8 events, finish 2nd at Pinecrest

Covington wins 2 sprints in opening MSC meet

SOUTHERN PINES — Continuing its momentum from last weekend’s invitational, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ track and field team racked up the wins and points Wednesday.

Facing host Pinecrest High School and Pine Forest High School in their first Mid-South Conference meet of the season, the Raiders won eight events and finished in second place.

The Patriots won the event, scoring 332 points across the 18 total events. Pine Forest was third with 91 points.

In addition to their eight individual event victories, the Raiders had five second-place finishes and three third, fourth and fifth place results.

Sophomore Ty Covington was responsible for two of the eight wins. He won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.17 seconds and followed that with a victory in the 110-meter hurdles (15.25 seconds).

Richmond’s only other win on the track came in the 400-meter dash. Senior Christian Surgent won the race with a time of 50.21 seconds.

The Raiders’ other five wins were all in field events – three jumping and two throwing.

Taking wins in jumping events were junior Josiah Brewington (high jump, 5 feet, 11 inches); senior Keonta Pegues (long jump, 21 feet, 7 inches); and senior Domonic Tillman (triple jump, 46 feet, 5 inches).

Juniors Jeremiah Covington (140 feet, 4 inches) and Elijah Ingram (49 feet, 4 inches) won the discus and shot put, respectively.

Pegues started the runner-up placements with a second-place time of 22.48 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Also taking second was the 4x100-meter relay team (44.0 seconds).

Three more field events added eight points each with second-place distances. Senior Jordan Hamilton was second in the discus (117 feet, 0 inches), followed by senior Chamaure Shaw in the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches) and senior Amer Morrison in the long jump (20 feet, 6 inches).

In third place were sophomore Jonathan Leak, freshman Jazari Dawkins and the 4x800-meter relay team (9:34.00). Leak was third in the 300-meter hurdles (43.83 seconds) and Dawkins cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet, 1 inch.

Shaw notched his second top-five finish with a fourth-place distance of 39 feet, 9.5 inches in the triple jump. Other fourth-place finishers were sophomore Ziyair Ingram (300-meter hurdles, 44.79 seconds) and junior Jamaury Jones in the discus (111 feet, 3 inches).

Richmond’s trio of fifth-place performances came from junior Chance Crowder in the 100-meter dash (11.59 seconds), Morrison in the open 200 race (22.65 seconds) and Crowder again in the long jump (18 feet, 4 inches).

The Raiders will compete in the Cummings High School Invitational Saturday. Events will begin at 9 a.m.
