ROCKINGHAM — A man on probation for a drug charge in Georgia is accused of impeding traffic with a takeover.
According to an arrest warrant, 36-year-old Decario Antwan McKinnon performed donuts in the middle of East Broad Avenue (U.S. 74 Business) in Rockingham on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
By doing so, the warrant states that McKinnon impeded the normal flow of traffic.
Online court records show McKinnon was cited for street takeover — as well as reckless driving to endanger and driving while license revoked — in September 2024 for doing burnouts at the intersection of Long Drive and Fayetteville Road (U.S. 1). McKinnon took a plea deal to drop the takeover and reckless driving violations with a conviction on the revoked license charge.
However, since the latest charge is within 24 months, McKinnon was charged by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office with a felony count of street takeover.
He was arrested Oct. 23 and is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $300,000 secured bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 13.
Records show McKinnon also has a pending charge of hit and run leaving the scene with property damage from earlier this month.
McKinnon was convicted Jan. 31, 2024 of possession of a controlled substance in Georgia, according to records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction. He was given probation with a supervision term of one year, 10 months and seven days.
Records show he was previously convicted in Georgia of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance in 2016 and given a supervision term of nine years, 11 months and 24 days. (Note: The offense date is the same as the 2024 conviction.)
In 2023, McKinnon was convicted in Richmond County of fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance (marijuana) and maintaining any place for a controlled substance. Those charges were filed in 2018. Records show he has a probation violation hearing in December.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
