RCSO: Man wanted for stalking in Scotland County charged with fleeing from Richmond County deputy

ROCKINGHAM — A man wanted on misdemeanor stalking and trespassing charges in Scotland County is accused of leading Richmond County deputies on a chase Tuesday.

According to an arrest warrant, a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop 32-year-old Karon T. Harrington, of Laurinburg, for speeding. A social media post from the RCSO says Harrington was driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The warrant alleges Harrington fled and was driving in excess of 15 mph above the posted speed limit on Wiregrass Road, County Home Road and the intersection of U.S. 1, before “coming to a stop due to traffic congestion.”

Harrington, a convicted felon, was also allegedly in possession of a Taurus 9mm handgun.

Another warrant for Harrington’s arrest was issued March 26 after he allegedly threatened to “shoot up” a house on Hickory Street in Laurinburg. Harrington is also accused of frequently driving by the house at a high rate of speed and pacing through the yard.

Harrington was arrested and charged with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon in Richmond County.

(Note: The post from RCSO mentions Harrington is also charged with carrying a concealed gun, driving with a revoked license and numerous traffic violations. However, as of April 2, those were not reflected in jail or court records.)

He was also served with the Scotland County warrant on misdemeanor charges of stalking, communicating threats and trespassing.

Harrington is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $22,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in court April 17 on the Richmond County charges and April 29 on the Scotland County charges.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Harrington was given a 24-month suspended sentence in July 2023 when he was convicted of discharging a weapon into an occupied property and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Harrington has multiple other prior felony and misdemeanor convictions:

2012 - larceny of firearms; receiving or possessing a stolen firearm; felony breaking and entering; larceny after breaking and entering

2014 - resisting an officer

2016 - possession of stolen goods; misdemeanor larceny

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
