Reading is Important, Even for Adults

Posted

HAMLET - Reading, even as adults, is how we discover new things, how we develop a self-image, and how we can enhance our vocabulary skills, among many other things.  An anonymous quote that has stuck with me through life is “Never make fun of someone who mispronounces a word. It means they learned it by reading.” Another one that we will discuss later: “Life is too short to finish bad books.” It took me a long time to accept the second one, but now if the book is bad it gets taken to the used book store long before it is finished.

Reading helps expand the mind and develop the imagination. It is a vital skill in communication, socialization and entertainment. Think of it this way: if you can read, you can educate yourself in any area of life you see fit. In this age of information, reading is still a powerful way to stay informed.

I was raised a reader. I read R.L Stines Goosebumps series as a small child. I discovered Judy Blume; The Babysitters Club; Nancy Drew; and The Hardy Boys as a child. I later upgraded to comic books (yes, they certainly count as reading) and anything I could get my hands on that peaked my interest. I came by this interest honestly; my mom has always read, usually four-to-five books a week. (I can read maybe two.)

So why all this information about how beneficial reading is? Well, it’s simple.  According to a survey posted online by Psychology Today, many people want to read more but they don’t know where to start. They wish the avid readers they know would recommend books to them, thereby helping to get them started. That’s where I come in. I want to be your friendly neighborhood avid reader.

I don’t want you to have to fish through the ocean of books, and I don’t want you to give up because the book just wasn’t what you thought.  I want to recommend books to you, and I don’t want you to waste precious reading time on “bad books.”

I will be providing reading recommendations, right here, as often as possible. I hope these ideas will help inspire people to check out or pick up a book and fall in love with it. I hope that I inspire a passion for one of the greatest arts available. You can be anyone, know anyone, go anywhere, and do anything, and never have to leave your living room. So my very first recommendation is that you grab your favorite quilt, brew a cup of your favorite tea, and snuggle in for some quality reading time. Stephanie’s Recommendations are coming your way!
