Red Rams, Rockets earn wins in season openers

Local middle school basketball teams opened their season on Monday, and both the Hamlet and Rockingham boys picked up wins.

Hamlet defeats East Hoke

The Hamlet Red Rams began their season with a 49-32 win over East Hoke, and all 11 players contributed to the win.

Leading the team with 17 points was Amer Morrison, who also hit three three-pointers. Morrison grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.

Terande Spencer notched a double-double in the win for the Red Rams with 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. He hit two three-pointers.

Also scoring for Hamlet was Evan Hodges, who netted 8 points, including going 4-for-4 from the free throw line late in the game. Zamarion Robinson had 6 points, Dougie Dickinson chipped in 4 points and Chamaure Shaw had 3 points.

Head coach Keith Parsons said it was a “great effort from our group today,” and he wanted to thank everyone who supported the team.

The Red Rams (1-0) will host Sandy Grove Middle School on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Rockingham rolls past West Hoke

Also getting a win in their first game of the season, the Rockingham Rockets cruised past West Hoke 54-33.

Chance Crowder and Jayden Hamilton were the game’s leading scorers, who both scored 19 points. Dominic Tillman also reached double figures, netting 11 points for the Rockets.

“Defense was the key in the win,” head coach Julius Bowden said. “Coach Green has done a great job conditioning the guys and it was obvious tonight.

“Jay Hamilton and Chance Crowder were aggressive on both ends of the court, which led to easy transition baskets.”

Bob Pegues (3 points) and Andrae Streeter (2 points) also added points in the victory.

The Rockets (1-0) will travel to Carver Middle School on Thursday and start at 5 p.m.
