SANFORD — Not forgetting how its season started a week ago, the Richmond Senior High School volleyball team got even Tuesday.
Notching its second straight win, the Lady Raiders redeemed their season-opening loss to Lee County with a four-set victory.
Scores in the 3-1 win were 25-18, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-17 to even the non-conference series.
Head coach Ashleigh Larsen praised the team’s efforts from start to finish, especially the fast start and the way Richmond bounced back after losing a close second set.
“I was pleased with the way the girls responded in this match after losing the season opener to Lee County,” head coach Ashleigh Larsen said. “We opened the match by winning the first set, which is always a great way to get things going and something we’ve struggled with in past years.
“Even after we lost the second set, the girls were resilient to come back and win the next two sets,” she added. “We worked on a lot of little areas of focus in practice yesterday and the girls showed a lot of improvement tonight. This is a big win to start the week.”
Richmond (2-1) plays on the road again Wednesday at non-conference Montgomery Central High School. The varsity match will begin at 6:30 p.m.
JV Lady Raiders fall short
The Richmond junior varsity volleyball team also played at Lee County Tuesday but wasn’t able to earn a victory.
Losing 2-0, the JV Lady Raiders were outscored 23-25 and 13-25.
Head coach Melissa Dennis noted that Richmond “got back on our heels a little” and the team "wasn't aggressive enough and lost momentum.”
The JV Lady Raiders (1-2) also play at Montgomery Central Wednesday. Action will start at 5 p.m.
