Regular season ends, Lady Raiders prepare for conference tournament

ROCKINGHAM — The regular season came to an end for the Richmond Senior High School volleyball team Thursday.

Playing at Scotland High School, the Lady Raiders fell by a final score of 3-0. Set scores were 14-25, 23-25 and 17-25.

“Offensively, we could not get in a groove,” head coach Ashleigh Larsen shared. “We put up some good blocks and recovered a lot on defense when we were able to.

“But we struggled up front,” she added. “Serving was also a bit of an issue. Many of the back row players had a good game on serve-receive and made some key digs.”

Although the regular season is in the books, Monday will be the start of the Sandhills Athletic Conference championship tournament.

Richmond (7-13, 3-9 SAC) finished sixth in the conference and will travel to third-seeded Union Pines High School (13-7, 7-5 SAC). The match will start at 6 p.m.

In their two regular-season matches with Union Pines this season, the Lady Raiders lost 3-0 both times.

No. 1 Pinecrest High School (17-8, 12-0 SAC) won the outright conference title, its seventh in a row. The Lady Patriots received a first-round bye in the tournament.

The Lady Raiders are currently projected as one of the final few teams to make the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs.

Junior varsity season comes to an end

The Richmond junior varsity volleyball team also played at Scotland Thursday.

The JV Lady Raiders dropped the match by a final score of 2-0.

It was the JV Lady Raiders’ final match of the season, which put their record at 8-11 overall and 5-7 against SAC opponents.

“We really came a long way this season,” head coach Melissa Dennis said. “I really enjoyed watching them get an understanding of the game.

“Our record did not reflect the growth the girls made,” she ended. “I hope for more big things next season.”
