ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Animal Shelter is hosting an adoption and foster event this weekend to clear the kennels for Christmas.
Much like at Halloween, the shelter will be decorated for the holiday.
“The inside of the shelter looks like winter wonderland has blown up,” Director Tessie Caulder-Brigman, said in a video on social media. “The inside looks marvelous — all the dogs have stockings, all the cats have stockings.”
Each child who attends the event will have an opportunity to meet with Santa — with photos during the final hour — and receive their own little stocking.
The event runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 and will include the food trucks Simon’s Kitchen and Mini’s on the Go.
While her truck won’t be on site, Grace Bostic has also offered a free coffee from Bently’s Brews to anyone who shows proof of adoption from the event.
As of 3:50 p.m. Thursday, Caulder-Brigman said there was a combined total of 91 dogs and cats at the shelter, with more scheduled to be taken in later in the day.
Caulder-Brigman and her staff have been striving to make the facility as close to a no-kill shelter as possible since taking over operations in October 2024.
However, that goal has been a difficult one to reach with the constant intake from Animal Control, owner surrenders and illegal drop-offs.
