ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County has averaged around 10 new cases of COVID-19 each day for the past two weeks, according to statistics from the Health Department.

Fourteen new cases were reported on Friday, making 46 so far this week. The Health Department also reported 10 each on Wednesday and Thursday and six each on Monday and Tuesday.

There were 60 total cases reported Monday through Saturday of last week. The Health Department does not release new case numbers on Sundays.

Of the 617 cases reported since early April, 504 have recovered, leaving 104 current active cases.

The number of active cases hit 118 on Aug. 18, the highest since 119 were reported on Aug. 3. The highest number of active cases at one time was 138 reported on July 27. The lowest number of active cases in recent months was 65, reported on both Aug. 7 and 10. That was the fewest cases reported since June 25 when there were 68.

According to the Health Department, only one patient is currently hospitalized while 103 are under home isolation.

The number of positive cases is less than 10 percent of all those tested, with 6,281 residents receiving a negative result.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell told the RO on Friday that the Health Department is not made aware if new patients are symptomatic or asymptomatic.

According to a July 10 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s estimated that 40% of those infected are asymptomatic.

The infectiousness of those who are asymptomatic relative to those who are symptomatic is estimated at 75%.

Statewide, new daily cases continue a roller-coaster ride, dropping to 564 on Aug. 17 — the fewest since 488 were reported May 27 — rising back up to 2,008 on Aug. 21, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. But overall, North Carolina is seeing a downward trend since peaking at 2,481 on July 18.

Out of 2,030,885 North Carolinians tested, 151,912 have tested positive. As of Aug. 17, DHHS estimates that 127,749 state residents who tested positive have recovered. The state releases new recovery estimates each Monday.
