ROCKINGHAM — A local nonprofit retailer will be making a large contribution to the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.
The Richmond County Cancer Care Treasure Shop announced earlier this month that its proceeds — from floor sales alone — for 2024 total $70,000.
“We are super excited about this, and we couldn't have done it without each and every one of our amazing customers!!” reads a Feb. 13 Facebook post. “With each purchase made, and with each donation, you all have helped us in helping those fighting their fight against cancer!”
According to the post, proceeds go toward helping cancer patients with needs including lodging, transportation, food and treatments.
“Thank you all for your continued support,” the post continues. “We can only pray that in 2025, we can donate just as much with the dedication of trying to raise and donate more!!”
The Treasure Shop also hosted the fourth annual “Walk for a Cure” in October, raising $981.
The Treasure Shop opened in 2018 to support Relay for Life. Owner Rodney Gandy told the RO on Friday that this makes more than $350,000 that has been raised since the pandemic:
“Everything in our store is donated from people in the community whether it be clothing items for men, women and children to household items such as furniture, home decor, and appliances,” Heather Guinn, store manager, said in an email.
Next month, the Treasure Shop will be raffling off a 43-inch Easter bunny with a basket. Tickets are $3 each or two for $5.
Gandy said there are plans to restart Relay for Life in Richmond County, and there will soon be a meeting for those interested in helping.
