Richmond County checkpoint leads to fentanyl trafficking arrest

ROCKINGHAM — A Richmond County man is facing a trafficking charge following a traffic stop.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the Patrol Division, Traffic Safety Team and Community Impact Team were conducting a license check Jan. 11 (the press release doesn’t say where) when K-9 Hunter alerted to the vehicle of 35-year-old Grayson Kane Goodman.

Deputies searched the vehicle and reportedly found 7.65 grams of fentanyl, three glass smoking pipes “with residue,” and a set of digital scales.

According to the sheriff’s office,“illicitly manufactured fentanyl is particularly hazardous because its potency and composition are unregulated, leaving users unaware if a dose may be lethal.”

Citing the Drug Enforcement Administration, the sheriff’s office says the amount of fentanyl reportedly in Goodman’s possession “could contain about 3,825 potentially fatal doses.”

Goodman is charged with one felony count of trafficking in fentanyl and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 22.

The sheriff’s office says Goodman was also cited for having an expired registration and driving while license revoked. However, those infractions were not reflected in online court records at the time of writing.

Records show Goodman has no other pending charges or prior convictions.

During the two-hour checkpoint, deputies also issued one charge for possession of marijuana and the following citations:

  • 14 for driving with a revoked license
  • Three for not having a valid driver’s license
  • One insurance violation
  • One child restraint violation

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
