Richmond County, city governments closed after snow

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County is closed.

The county government, as well as the municipal governments of Rockingham and Hamlet, announced that offices are closed Wednesday following about an inch of snowfall Tuesday evening.

The county initially was operating on a two-hour delay but announced a full closure around 8:30 a.m.

The city of Rockingham said that garbage service will resume on Thursday, weather permitting.

Richmond County Schools was scheduled for remote instruction on Wednesday. As of this writing, there is no word on Thursday.

Based on various reports from residents, it seems that major roads like U.S. 74 Business, U.S. 220 and U.S. 1 are mostly clear for travel. However, residents report that secondary roads are still slick, especially in shaded areas.

The National Weather Service has lifted the cold weather advisory, with a high temperature of 33 degrees expected for Wednesday. However, there is still cold weather ahead.

The NWS warns that any snow that melts during the day will freeze once the sun goes down, making travel hazardous. The overnight low is expected to dip to 12 degrees.

Although the forecasted high for Thursday is 39, meteorologists say the wind chill values will have it feeling around 15 degrees, with overnight lows dropping to around 22 degrees.

Friday’s high is expected to reach the mid-40s, with an overnight low around 19 degrees.
