ROCKINGHAM — A man is accused of using someone else’s debit card to make several purchases on Christmas Eve.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a callon Dec. 24, 2023 from a woman who had lost her debit card and had notifications that transactions had been made.
Deputies reportedly went to several retail locations where those transactions were made and reviewed security video. They reportedly identified the suspect as 58-year-old David Malcom Baucom II of Rockingham.
Warrants for Baucom’s arrest were obtained and deputies went to his home to take him into custody, according to a press release.
Baucom reportedly asked to go back inside to “secure several things” before being taken to jail. One of the deputies reportedly saw a piece of glass with “what appeared to be cocaine powder on it.” Baucom allegedly blew the powder off the glass “to destroy the narcotics.”
He was booked into the Richmond County Jail at 1:23 p.m. Dec. 24 on the following charges: five counts of obtaining property by false pretense; one count each of financial card theft, financial card fraud, and altering or destroying criminal evidence.
As of Jan. 3, Baucom was still being held on a combined $40,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 4.
Online court records show Baucom also has pending charges of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, in addition to several traffic infractions.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Baucom was convicted in 2005 on three counts each of felony breaking and entering, and obtaining property by false pretense.
Baucom was previously convicted in 2000 of driving while impaired in Scotland County.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
