HICKORY — The Richmond County Department of Social Services was recently awarded for a community partnership to help with children in county custody.
The Innovation Award for Community Engagement was presented Thursday at the North Carolina Association of County Directors of Social Services’ annual Social Services Institute being held this week in Hickory.
The awards, according to the NCACDSS website, “provide an opportunity to recognize innovative, successful, and unique programs within county Social Services offices and share these innovations with other counties and the public.”
According to Social Services Director Theressa Smith, county departments were asked to submit practices that they were doing in their communities that are innovative.
Richmond County DSS partnered with a local 24-hour daycare so that children who are living in the agency who are daycare age can spend the night there instead of sleeping in the agency, Smith said.
Smith accepted the award along with Linda Collins, program manager for Child Protective Services.
NCACDSS is celebrating its 100th year.
