ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County Hospice’s spring fundraiser, Cool Cars for a Cause, returns for its sixth year this weekend.
The event, sponsored by Watson-King Funeral Home and other local businesses, began in 2019, with car and truck owners showing off their rides on the front lawn.
Trophies will be presented to the Top 25 entries, as determined by participant selection. Judges will decide the manufacturer awards for Best GM, Best Ford and Best Mopar; and judges and RCH staff will pick Best in Show and Director’s Choice.
Registration is from 8:30 a.m.-noon. The first entry is $20 and subsequent entries are $10. The event runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
In case of rain — which doesn’t seem likely based on the current forecast — the event will be moved to March 28.
RCH will be selling hot dogs during the car show and there will be several other food trucks on site: Puckered Up Lemonade; Bentley’s Brews Coffee; and Chinese Food and Dulces Delicias.
The event will also feature multiple vendors: Bonnie Thompson's T-shirts; Sandra's Pillows; Wonderfully Created; Meme's Crafts; Carolina Hearts Home Care; and Richmond Community College Cole Auditorium.
The fifth annual Cool Cars for a Cause in 2025 was the largest, so far, featuring more than 70 vehicles and raising $6,700.
The event was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to health concerns related to the pandemic. However, nearly $21,000 has been raised the past four years.
Hospice’s largest fundraiser, Taste of the Sandhills/Dancing with the Stars, is held in September and brings in tens of thousands of dollars each year.
In addition to its primary mission, RCH has also been involved with community outreach, with its inaugural Salute to Veterans on Nov. 11, 2011, and the Halloween-themed Candy Cavalcade in 2021. Both events are ongoing.
Hospice also hosts an annual grief camp for children in grades Kindergarten through eighth who have experienced a recent loss. This year’s camp was held on March 13.
