ROCKINGHAM — A sex offender is back in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13.
The district attorney’s office announced Tuesday that 38-year-old Brandon Lee Renyolds was found guilty July 20 on one count of statutory sexual offense with a child by an adult and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.
Court records show Reynolds was initially charged in September 2021 with three felony counts of first-degree statutory sex, three counts of committing a crime against nature, two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, and one count of statutory sex offense with a child by an adult.
According to court records, the incidents occurred in April of 2021.
Additional court records show Reynolds was indicted May 4 on a separate count of taking indecent liberties with a child (with an offense date also listed as April 2021), but was found not guilty by a jury.
Reynolds was represented by court-appointed attorney Scott Forbes of Wadesboro.
According to the DA’s office, the jury heard testimony from the victim and the state — represented by Erica Dunham and Amber Hardy — ”presented testimony from additional individuals who described similar unlawful conduct by the Defendant when they were under the age of 13.”
“That evidence corroborated the victim’s testimony and demonstrated a recurring pattern of conduct,” reads a press release.
Reynolds was sentenced to a minimum of 38 years for the statutory sex offense charge, and a minimum of 31 months for each of the two indecent liberties charges. The sentences will run consecutively.
“The courage displayed by these victims in coming forward cannot be overstated,” District Attorney Jamie Adams said in a statement. “Reliving traumatic experiences in a courtroom is incredibly difficult, yet their willingness to tell the truth ensured that this defendant was held accountable for years of criminal conduct.”
Adams continued, saying that the verdict “sends a clear message that those who abuse children will be vigorously prosecuted, and our office will continue to stand with victims every step of the way in the pursuit of justice.”
The DA’s office also thanked Rockingham Police Chief George Gillenwater and Detective Jan Owens “for the investigation and assistance throughout this case.”
Reynolds has filed a notice of appeal.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Reynolds was convicted of attempted second-degree forcible rape in 2018 and served less than two years in prison.
According to the N.C. Sex Offender Registry, Reynolds was 28 at the time of the incident and the victim was 11.
He was released on Feb. 24, 2020 and his parole was set to end Feb. 22, 2025.
The Sex Offender Registry lists no violations, however court documents show that Reynolds still has a pending charge of failing to report a new address from 2021.
Reynolds, according to records, failed to appear in court for that charge on Dec. 1, 2025. An order for arrest was issued Dec. 11, 2025 and he was arrested May 7.
State records show Reynolds was first convicted in 2004 on misdemeanor charges of simple assault, disorderly conduct and violation of a court order.
In 2013, Reynolds was convicted of assault on a female.
Following his 2020 release from prison, Reynolds went back on a three-month reimprison violation.
DAC records show Reynolds has several infractions while serving time in prison:
Oct. 27, 2021 - disobeying an order
Nov. 1, 2021 - selling or misuse of medication, unauthorized tobacco use
Feb. 2, 2026 - lock tampering
Reynolds’ current location is listed as Scotland Correctional Institution.
