ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Foundation has several events lined up this weekend to honor the legacy of the late civil rights leader.
The weekend kicks off Friday with the Sneaker Ball from 6-11 p.m. at the Leak Street Cultural Center gymnasium. Tickets for the semi-formal event are $15.

The celebration continues on Saturday with the annual prayer breakfast, starting at 9 a.m. at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond in Rockingham.

The annual MLK Parade starts at noon in downtown Rockingham on East Washington Street, with Ronald Tilman serving as the grand marshal.
Tilman is an elected member of the Richmond County Board of Education and has worked in juvenile justice since 1997, serving as Piedmont area manager for the N.C. Department of Public Safety Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Tilman also serves on multiple community boards and committees.

Later on Saturday, there will be a Youth Speak Out Sneaker Ball from 5-9 p.m. back at Leak Street. This event is free and open to kids aged 12-17.

Sunday’s annual Eccumenical service will be at Mount Pisgah AME Zion Church on Leak Street, with Sharon Hutchinson as the guest speaker.
Hutchinson, wife of Rockingham Mayor John Hutchinson, is a former assistant district attorney and private practice attorney and has served on several executive boards in the community.

Activities conclude Monday with the annual MLK Luncheon at Wayman Chapel Faith Center starting at noon. Guest speaker for the luncheon is District Attorney Jamie Adams.
