Richmond County Schools on standby for possible remote learning

HAMLET — Richmond County Schools has canceled or postponed all afterschool and weekend activities ahead of a winter storm expected to drop several inches of snow across the state.

That includes postponing the basketball games scheduled for Friday night at Pine Forest High School in Cumberland County, as forecasters predict snow could begin falling before midnight. No make-up date has yet been set, according to RO Sports Editor Kyle Pillar.

A social media post from the district says that students “have been provided with remote instructional work to be completed only if a remote instructional day is announced.

School district officials say they will monitor conditions over the weekend and announce a determination regarding Monday no later than 5 p.m. Sunday.

“Announcements about delays, closures, or remote learning will be shared through automated phone calls, the district website, district social media, and local news outlets,” the post concludes.

Students were relegated to remote learning both Monday and Tuesday of this week following a weekend winter storm that brought sleet and freezing rain to the region.

According to the 4 p.m. update from the National Weather Service, the southwestern corner of the county (and southeastern Anson County) could see 8-10 inches of snow, compared to the 6-8 inches predicted for the rest of the area.

Temperatures early Monday morning are expected to be in the single digits, making roads hazardous if any snow melts on Sunday with a high of 34 degrees predicted.
