Richmond County Schools opts for another remote day after snow

HAMLET — Students get one more day physically out of school as some rural roads may remain rough.

Richmond County Schools announced that the district will have a consecutive day of remote instruction on Thursday “due to the potential for icy road conditions.”

There will also be no classes for RCS students or taking classes at Richmond Community College, as all classes there have been canceled. RichmondCC operate on a two-hour delay for staff and close at 5 p.m.

RCS has also canceled all after-school and athletic activities for Jan. 23.

The conference championship in swimming, which was scheduled for Wednesday night, has been canceled with no make-up. Basketball games slated for Thursday have been rescheduled for Feb. 12 and bowling games have been moved to next week.

Friday’s home varsity basketball games against Southern Lee and Saturday’s wrestling conference championship at Union Pines are scheduled as normal.

Elsewhere, Richmond County government offices will operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday, and the city of Rockingham will open just one hour later at 9 a.m. The city of Hamlet will operate on a normal schedule.

Although a lot of the snow that fell Tuesday evening melted on Wednesday, some areas could still see icy roads as temperatures are expected to dip to around 9 degrees overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, Thursday’s high is expected to be in the upper 30s but wind chill values could make it feel as cold as 10 degrees.

Counties to the east — including Scotland, Hoke and Cumberland — remain under a winter weather advisory for black ice. Those same counties, with the addition of Moore, are also under a cold weather advisory.
