ROCKINGHAM — Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office have charged a woman in a child abuse case.

Brittany Rose Smith, 32, is accused of inflicting serious injury on her 13-year-old child on Feb. 7, causing bruising on the eye, a scratch under the eye and a lacerated lip. According to an arrest warrant, those injuries were “inflicted by other than accidental means.”

Smith also allegedly assaulted a 10-year-old child by “striking her in the face.” The warrant does not specify if Smith is the parent of the second child.

An arrest warrant — charging Smith with misdmeanor child abuse and assault on a child under 12 — was issued on June 4. Records show she was arrested by a deputy with the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office on June 13 and was booked into the Richmond County Jail on June 24.

(NOTE: The warrant lists Smith having an address in Ellerbe, while court records show an address in Albemarle.)

Smith is being held on a $10,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 3.

Records appear to show Smith has no other pending criminal charges or prior convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
