ROCKINGHAM —Richmond County and the rest of Central North Carolina will be under a cold weather advisory as a second chance at winter weather seems possible.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory, effective from 10 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday, with overnight wind chills expected in the single digits.
According to the forecast, the low Monday night into Tuesday morning is expected to be in the mid-teens, with 5-7 mph winds. The high on Tuesday is predicted to be just a few degrees above freezing, with the winds making it feel as cold as 5 degrees.
Forecasters are currently calling for a 40% chance of snow, of less than a half-inch, Tuesday night, with lows again dipping into the teens.
The high on Wednesday is expected to reach 36 degrees, with a wind chill factor of around 10 degrees.
Subfreezing overnight lows are expected to continue the next few days: 16 degrees Wednesday into Thursday; 23 degrees Thursday into Friday; 21 degrees Friday into Saturday; and 25 degrees Saturday into Sunday.
Daytime highs are also forecast to remain below 50 degrees until Sunday.
With the cold temps, residents are encouraged to keep pets indoors if possible. The Berry Patch in Ellerbe was giving out free straw for pet bedding on Sunday and Monday.
Faucets should also be left dripping overnight to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.
