WHISPERING PINES — Another strong outing for the Richmond Senior High School boys’ golf team Monday was matched by a couple of opponents.
After finishing second in last week’s Sandhills Athletic Conference match, the Raiders were leapfrogged by two opponents in their second 18-hole SAC match of the season.
Competing at the Country Club of Whispering Pines, the Raiders finished fourth out of seven qualifying teams. Richmond’s top four golfers combined for a team score of 348.
Taking nine more shots than last week’s season-low round of 339, Richmond was bumped back by second-place Union Pines High School (337) and third-place Lee County High School (345).
Winning the match was Pinecrest High School, which posted a final score of 293. Joshua Groom’s even-par 72 led the field.
"We had another good day,” head coach Keith Parsons said. “Unfortunately, so did Union Pines and Lee County, so we finished fourth.
“I’m very happy with how our boys played. The River Course at Country Club of Whispering Pines is not easy, and we dug in all day."
Junior Kevin Tabacolde returned to the lineup and led the team for the first time this season. He finished the day with an 83 in his first full conference performance of the spring.
Just behind him, sophomore CJ Turner ended his round with an 85. Turner, who had led Richmond’s scorecard in each of the team’s matches this season, was five shots off from his season-low round.
Tabacolde and Turner finished the match 11th and 13th overall, respectively.
Sophomore Graham Odom and freshman Drake Wallace were the next two Raiders to finish highest on the scorecard. Odom posted an 89 (19th overall) and Wallace shot a 91 (23rd overall).
The Raiders’ other two golfers competing were sophomore Grayson Robson (92) and senior Tyler McKenzie (100).
Through four SAC matches this season, two nine-hole and two 18-hole matches, the Raiders have 20 points in the conference standings.
The Raiders will make up their home match, which was rained out last month, Tuesday at Foxfire Resort. The nine-hole contest will begin at 3 p.m.
