ROCKINGHAM — When the Richmond Senior High School wrestling program hosts its annual summer development camp in July, it will be one of the first times for its new coaching staff to work with current and future wrestlers.
Athletic director James Johnson announced this week that former Raider wrestler Joey Nicholson had been named the new head coach.
Nicholson, who graduated from Richmond in 2020, wrestled collegiately at UNC Pembroke. He’s spent the last couple of seasons coaching the district’s middle school team.
In addition to Nicholson taking over, Tyler Bostelman will serve as the program’s new assistant coach.
Richmond’s wrestling camp, which was started three years ago by former head coach Andre’ Ellerbe, will be open for local boys and girls who are interested in the sport.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association recently officially sanctioned girls’ wrestling as a winter sport.
Returning for its fourth year, Richmond’s wrestling camp is scheduled for Monday, July 6, through Thursday, July 9.
Each daily session will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and be held in Richmond’s gymnasiums. The camp is open to boys and girls who are rising third graders through high schoolers.
The cost for camp is $50 and campers can be pre-registered ahead of time by purchasing a ticket on GoFan. There is an additional $3.50 processing fee if paid online.
Campers can also pay at the door during the first day of camp with cash or check.
Similar to years past, this summer’s camp will focus on teaching the sport’s fundamentals and basic moves to beginners, while also fine-tuning skills and techniques for those who have more experience.
