ROCKINGHAM — The longest-running and largest youth development summer camp is returning to Richmond Senior High School next month.

Soccer has continued to grow in interest and talent the last decade in Richmond County, and with it an influx of local youngsters getting involved in the game.

The Richmond soccer program, led by head coach Chris Larsen, will host its annual four-day soccer camp from Monday, June 15, through Thursday, June 18.

Averaging between 100 and 120 participants the last few years, Richmond’s soccer camp will return for its 27th year.

Each daily session will run from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Camp is open to boys and girls ages six to 15, or who are rising kindergarteners through rising high school sophomores.

The cost per camper this summer is $75, which includes a camp t-shirt. Registration is currently open and families can pay with a cash or check at the high school.

An online payment option is also available through GoFan, which includes a $4.25 processing fee.

Campers are asked to bring their own shin guards, cleats and water bottle. Water and other necessary equipment will be provided on site, which will be Richmond’s soccer field and practice field.

Similar to years prior, this summer’s camp will split campers into several age groups and focus on the fundamentals and areas of growth that are appropriate for each skill level.

Helping Larsen direct the camp will be longtime Richmond soccer coach Bennie Howard. Also on hand will be a number of former and current Raider and Lady Raider soccer players to guide instruction.

Hoping for another strong showing from the community, Larsen expects this summer’s camp to be one of the best ones yet.

“Our summer camp is always one of our favorite events throughout the year,” Larsen said. “It brings our community together and allows our players and coaches the opportunity to give back.

“Each summer we see so many returning faces that are a year older and more skilled. Our hope is to continue to grow the sport’s interest while also better preparing all ages and skill levels for rec, middle school and high school soccer.

“And our biggest hope is that everyone comes out and has a good time, learns a little bit and has fun,” he closed. “We battle the heat every year, but we always see a lot of smiles.
