Richmond's varsity, JV teams hold off Lumberton for dual wins

Posted

ROCKINGHAM — Both of Richmond Senior’s soccer teams earned wins Wednesday evening at home against the Lumberton Pirates.

The varsity Raiders finished with a 2-1 victory — both goals scored by junior Allen Franco with an assist by Cole Lambeth.

Franco said he was “happy to get the first win” at home.

“We’ve got an even record now, so hopefully we keep up the momentum,” Franco added.

Lambeth said he was proud of the team for its two-win streak.

“We’ve been coming along since the beginning of the season, after losing two close games at the beginning of the season that shouldn’t have been losses,” Lambeth said. “”We’re getting there and we’re just proving ourselves every week.”

The Raiders are currently 2-2 for the season after losing 1-2 at Central Academy of Technology and Arts and 0-2 at home last week against Porter Ridge. The first win came Aug. 17 in Fayetteville, besting Cape Fear 5-1.

“I thought we opened up the first half pretty good,” coach Chris Larsen said after the match against Lumberton. “We came out, kinda picked up where we left off the other night (when) we were able to put five in the back of the net (against Cape Fear).”

Larsen said the team “dropped the ball” allowing Lumberton’s Caleb Zindros — with an assist by John Dineant — “sneak one in” to tie the game 1-1 going into halftime.

“Like I told the guys at the end of the game, I’m glad we found a way to win,” Larsen added. “We’ve just got to play a full 80-minute soccer match working together as (a team), and just continue to get better each night.”

The Raiders are scheduled to play in the N.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association Select Soccer Kick-off Classic at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary.

“It’s just another experience for us to go and play a team that we might not normally see,” Larsen said. Richmond will be taking on Athens Drive Magnet High School from Raleigh.

The junior varsity Raiders picked up a 3-0 win against the Pirates, with Gunner Davis scoring in the first half. The second half saw goals from Jake Smith and Alan Santiago (with an assist from Davis.)

The JV team is now 3-1, with the only loss being the 0-4 defeat by Porter Ridge. As with the victory over Lumberton, Richmond held Central Academy and Cape Fear scoreless at 2-0 and 9-0, respectively.
