RO Sports bringing back 'Top Sports Moments' series

All of RSHS' athletic programs will be featured

ROCKINGHAM — Making its return to The Richmond Observer for the first time in five years is the recognition of the top high school athletics moments of the past school year.

However, unlike previous years, the review of the 2024-25 school year and the triumphs of student-athletes and teams at Richmond Senior High School won’t culminate in a Top 10 countdown.

Instead, each of the school’s 18 athletic programs will be recognized for its top moment during its season. Sports editor Kyle A. Pillar will choose each program’s pinnacle moment using the outcome, circumstances and emotions attached to the chosen event.

The top moments will be released one per day, in no specific order of importance, starting with the fall sports teams — cross country, football, boys’ soccer, girls’ golf, girls’ tennis and volleyball.

That will be followed by the winter sports teams — boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, bowling, indoor track and field, swimming and wrestling — and end with the spring sports teams, which include baseball, boys’ golf, girls’ soccer, softball, boy’s tennis and track and field.

Richmond’s athletic school year was filled with many successes from many, if not all, of its sports programs. From playoff runs, to individual program and school records and comeback wins, this series will explore some of those pivotal moments.

The Richmond Observer will start this series with the Lady Raider volleyball team Tuesday.

Sports editor’s note: The order of release for each program’s top moment from the 2024-25 school year is not an overall ranking.

The purpose of this series is to recognize key moments from this past year selected objectively by this writer.
