ASHEBORO — A road trip to a conference opponent didn’t end in favor of the Hamlet American Legion Junior baseball team Sunday.

Playing the first of two games this week against Randolph County Post 45 Red, the Junior 49ers suffered a 12-1 loss in five innings.

Hamlet scored its lone run in the Area 3 Conference matchup in the top of the first inning. Randolph County spread its scoring across two frames with five runs in the third and seven runs in the fifth inning.

Post 49 started Colton Brown on the mound, who threw 2.2 innings. He allowed five earned runs on five hits and also recorded a strikeout.

Wallace Herring tossed 1.2 innings of relief. He walked three batters which led to two earned runs. Closing out the final third of an inning was Colson Smith, who gave up five earned runs on three hits.

A one-out single, coupled with a stolen base and a wild pitch, allowed Julius Bowden to get into scoring position in the first. Noah Stubbs connected in the next at-bat on a hard ground ball single back up the middle for the RBI.

Hamlet recorded six hits in the loss, led by Stubbs’ two singles. Adding a base hit apiece were Bowden, Nate Culbreth, Drew Gause and Jaxton Watson.

The Junior Legion team (4-9, 1-3 Area 3) returns to play Tuesday when its host Randolph County Post 45 Red. The game will start at 7 p.m.
