SPRING LAKE — Unable to even its conference record Friday, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team lost its second game of the week.
Looking to establish more consistency in Mid-South Conference action, the JV Raiders couldn’t achieve that in an 80-67 loss at Overhills High School.
The JV Raiders were heavily outscored 26-13 in the first quarter, and again in the third quarter on a 22-16 run by the JV Jags.
Not going down without a fight, Richmond netted 26 points in the fourth to Overhills’ 16 points, but it wasn’t enough for the comeback.
The JV Raiders had four scorers reach double figures in the loss — Xander Chavis (15 points), Zymere Gillespie and Zakai Wilson (12 points each) and Cam Everett (10 points).
Other scorers included Devin Haynes (7 points), LaTavian Watkins (6 points), Samir Smith (4 points) and William Bryant (1 point).
Having his best game of the season, Wilson netted five points in the first quarter on two baskets and a free throw. Chavis got his scoring started with a pair of buckets.
Six players found the basket in the second as Richmond tried to chip away at a double-digit deficit. Haynes’ first four points on a field goal and two free throws led the team.
Watkins, Everett, Smith and Wilson each had two points in the second.
Gillespie, who had just two points in the first half, went off in the third quarter with eight points. He drained a pair of triples to go along two shots from the foul line.
Chavis scored his next four points in the quarter and Haynes made one shot from beyond the arc.
In the closing eight minutes, Chavis and Everett combined for 13 points. Chavis had two field goals and three free throws, while Everett made a trio of baskets from the floor.
Four others netted points in the fourth, including Wilson’s final five points, but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
