ROCKINGHAM — Samaritan Colony recently received $1,400 from Rockingham Dragway to help in its continuing efforts to treat chemical dependency.
Dragway co-owner Dan VanHorn presented a check to Samaritan Colony Executive Director Mark Christopher on Tuesday, with the donation coming from proceeds of the recent Super Chevy Show.
The Dragway donated $1 from each ticket to the facility in honor of National Recovery Month, observed in September.
Ansonia Soup Company at the Rock has also selected four dates over the next several months where it will donate 15% of the day’s sales to Samaritan Colony. The first was Sept. 6, and the next three are Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 5.
Samaritan Colony is celebrating its 50th anniversary of providing substance abuse treatment to men.
The State Employees Credit Union Women’s Recovery Center — first announced in 2018 — is awaiting state licensure and expected to open this year. Open houses were held Sept. 16 and 24 of the 14-bed facility for women.
Samaritan Colony is hosting a cornhole tournament Oct. 18 at Malcolm Blue Farm in Aberdeen, with the winning team taking home $500.
Registration is $50 per team and check-in time is noon-12:30 p.m.
The benefit will also include live music, food trucks, face painting, a dunk tank, and other kids' activities, according to the Facebook event page.
That event is free for spectators.
More than $20,000 was recently raised for the treatment center through the 16th annual Chris Pearson Memorial Golf Tournament, according to a Sept. 2 social media post.
The Richmond County Board of Commissioners approved $91,020 for the treatment program at the men’s facility and $75,000 for the soon-to-open women’s center from the opioid settlement funds during the board’s August meeting.
The board had previously approved nearly $200,000 in several allocations for Samaritan Colony’s treatment program for men, which reportedly served a total of 22 clients from July to December 2024, with 14 completing the program.
Multiple scholarships are available for those seeking treatment.
