ROCKINGHAM — Investigators have charged a man for allegedly trying to steal a vehicle at knifepoint.

According to a warrant, 44-year-old Mark Edward Basford, of Rockingham, tried to steal a 2017 Toyota Rav4 while attempting to steal a vehicle on April 2.

Basford is also accused of stealing a 16-ounce can of beer from the Dollar General on County Home Road the same day.

The warrant — charging Basford with one felony count each of breaking or entering a motor vehicle and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, as well as a count of misdemeanor larceny — was issued April 10 and the defendant was arrested April 17.

Basford is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $25,000 secured bond and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 1.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Basford was convicted of misdemeanor breaking and entering in 2007. His probation was revoked the following year and he spent just more than two weeks behind bars.

Basford spent nine months behind bars following a December 2012 conviction on charges of felony breaking and entering, speeding to elude arrest and assault on an officer or state employee.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
