ROCKINGHAM — A homeless man wanted on larceny charges since the summer is accused of fleeing from a police officer.
Warrants allege that a patrol officer with the Rockingham Police Department found 41-year-old Christopher Wayne Grant at a closed business and attempted to serve him with outstanding warrants when Grant fled on a bicycle on Feb. 26.
Grant was charged in August of 2025 for allegedly conspiring with four other people and stealing multiple items — including clothing products, food products, laundry products, storage bins, cat food ,body sprays, conditioners and razors — valued at $941.20 from the Dollar General on Fayetteville Road on Aug. 10.
A warrant charging Grant with misdemeanor larceny, misdemeanor conspiracy and possession of stolen goods or property was issued Aug. 28 and he was served Feb. 26.
Court records show an order for Grant’s arrest was issued on July 3, 2025 when he failed to appear in court on charges of possession of methamphetamine, selling methamphetamine and delivering methamphetamine.
The district attorney’s office dismissed the charges with leave, meaning they were just put on hold, on Feb. 2.
Grant is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $13,000 secured bond. Records show he had initially been given an unsecured bond on the drug charges.
Records show Grant is scheduled to appear in court March 12 on the larceny charges and March 18 on the resisting charge. No new date has been set for the drug charges.
According to the N.C. Department of Adult Correction, Grant has the following prior convictions:
2003 - driving while impaired
2007 - littering on public roads, damage to property
2008 - misdemeanor breaking and entering
2009 - driving while impaired, misdemeanor larceny
2011 - assault inflicting serious bodily injury
2012 - attempted larceny over $1,000
2016 - felony breaking and entering, assault inflicting serious injury
