Rockingham Police file charges in multiple break-ins over 3-day period

ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a 19-year-old in connection to multiple break-ins in the city limits during an alleged three-day crime spree.

Officers with the Rockingham Police Department reportedly saw Kemonte Jermaine Cummings attempting to open the door of a 2014 Nissan Altima in the Pineridge Drive area — the same street as his residence —on May 2.

Cummings reportedly ran from police when they approached, but he was caught after “a brief foot pursuit,” according to a post on the RPD’s Facebook page.

During the investigation, police reportedly linked Cummings to other incidents.

Cummings is accused of breaking into a 2006 Honda Accord on April 30 and stealing a Ruger Security .380-caliber handgun — which was reportedly recovered during a subsequent search of his home —as well as a laptop and chargers.

On May 1, Cummings allegedly broke into a neighbor’s “sleeping apartment” by climbing through a window and attempted to steal a pack of cigarettes.Police say the reporting victim tried to stop Cummings, but he got away.

Cummings is charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle with theft, larceny of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm in connection with the April 30 incident; and first-degree burglary and attempted misdemeanor larceny in connection to the May 1 incident.

Documents show the alleged car break-in attempt on May 2 is charged as “Other - Free Text.”

Cummings is also charged with two counts of resisting a public officer for allegedly running from the officer and “refusing to place hands behind back when commanded.”

He is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a combined $65,000 secured bond. His first appearance in court was May 4 and his next court date is scheduled for May 21.

Cummings appears to have no prior arrests in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
