ROCKINGHAM — Police are investigating a weekend shooting that left one woman slightly injured.
According to the Rockingham Police Department, officers responded to a call at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond just after 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13 after a woman arrived with a gunshot wound to the hand.
The victim reportedly told police that she believed the gunshot came from a neighboring apartment on Great Falls Circle, off of W. Franklin Street, behind the Fairfield Inn and Suites.
While inspecting the victim’s apartment, officers reportedly found a bullet hole in the wall that appeared to come from gunfire from an adjacent unit.
The resident of the neighboring apartment reportedly cooperated and gave officers permission to conduct a search.
Detective Sgt. Keeley Sutton responded with K-9 Mick, certified in firearms and explosives detection. While searching the apartment, Mick reportedly alerted to the presence of firearm-related odor around a safe. Inside that safe, officers reportedly found an extended magazine and several unfired rounds.
Sutton and Mick then searched a wooded area off of nearby Gore Drive where an unspecified firearm was reportedly found. Police say the gun had been reported stolen and was “consistent with the items found inside of the apartment.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, police said the investigation was still active and charges may be pending.
