ROCKINGHAM — Police have charged a man with a variety of offenses, ranging from larceny to drug possession.
One warrant, taken out by the Rockingham Police Department, alleges that 36-year-old Joseph Stuart Spurlin, of Rockingham, stole a utility trailer from Park Avenue on July 21. That warrant was issued 10 days later on July 31.
Court documents show that warrant was served on Tuesday, Aug. 12. That day, police reportedly found Sprurlin in possession of a stolen Smith & Wesson .380 semi-automatic handgun, as well as: 8.32 grams of marijuana; three dosage units of alprazolam (Xanax); two dosage units of oxycodone; seven suboxone strips; and a copper Chore Boy pad.
Spurlin is charged with: felony larceny; possession of stolen goods or property; possession of a stolen firearm; possession of a firearm by a felon; possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule III controlled substance; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was booked into the Richmond County Jail where he is being held on a combined $60,000 secured bond. Spurlin is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 28.
Spurlin has several pending traffic infractions from the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Spurlin was first convicted in 2010 of misdemeanor larceny.
Spurlin was convicted in 2013 of larceny of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm, and in 2017 of driving while impaired.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
