ROCKINGHAM — Police issued a statement Monday regarding “disturbing” social media posts over the weekend about a man allegedly pointing a gun at a woman.
One post featured a photo of the man walking along the road wearing a long black coat and white hat, with a woman saying he had been following her and her child through Walmart.
Another woman claimed the man had walked up to her car while she was at an intersection and pulled a gun on her — with her child in the car — when she refused to roll down the window.
The posts were shared more than 100 times.
Police say they were contacted about the posts.
“The Rockingham Police Department is familiar with this individual and interacts with him on a daily basis,” read a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page Monday afternoon.. “He has consented to a search of his person on multiple occasions and at no time has he been found to have had a gun. We have reviewed tape of an allegation involving him pointing a gun. The tape showed no gun, him simply pointing a finger.”
Police said while they cannot deem any one person “safe or unsafe,” their interactions with the man “have been cordial.”
“We hope that this clears the air on some of the speculation surrounding him and the allegations being posted about him.”
