MONROE — A man suspected of an armed robbery at a Rockingham beauty shop was recently apprehended in Union County.
According to warrants and police confirmation, 41-year-old Scottavaius Lorenzo Hailey, of Monroe, walked into Unisex Family Hair Care around 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, brandishing a toy gun covered with a rag.
Hailey allegedly pushed one of the two female victims against a wall during a struggle over a Ruger LCRX .38 Special revolver. The victim reportedly fell against a wooden bench and received a scrape on her arm.
Also during the struggle, the firearm reportedly discharged and the bullet struck an interior wall of the business.
Hailey reportedly gained control of the revolver and fled the scene on foot with it. Police also told the RO last week that he had taken a purse, but there is no related charge or mention of a purse in the warrant.
The warrants were obtained Sept. 22, charging Hailey with: two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon; larceny of a firearm; possession of a stolen firearm; possession of a firearm by a felon; and assault on a female.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, detectives there were investigating a Toyota Camry suspected of being used in multiple robberies.
Using surveillance video, investigators with the Rockingham Police Department were reportedly able to identify the tag on Haliey’s vehicle, “providing detectives with a key lead in the investigation.”
Investigators were reportedly able to link Hailey to armed robberies at Indian Trail Tobacco and Vape (where he is accused of discharging a firearm) and a Wingstop, both on Sept. 15, while wearing a mask.
Police previously said that the suspect in the Rockingham robbery was wearing a face covering.
Investigators with the UCSO and Monroe Police Department, along with agents from the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, executed a search warrant at Hailey’s home on Sept. 22, where “additional evidence” was seized to connect him to the robberies, according to a press release.
Rockingham Police Chief George Gillenwater told the RO that the stolen revolver was recovered.
Hailey is also accused of fleeing from a Monroe PD officer while in handcuffs.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office has charged Hailey with: three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon; two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon; discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear; second-degree kidnapping; and two local ordinance misdemeanors related to wearing masks or hoods.
He is also facing a charge of resisting a public officer from the Monroe Police Department.
Hailey is being held without bond in the Union County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 15 for the Richmond County charges and Nov. 5 for the Union County charges.
Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Hailey’s parole ended last month after being incarcerated for convictions on two counts of common law robbery and one count of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.
Hailey was previously convicted in 2015 on six counts (one attempted) of robbery with a dangerous weapon.
His prior convictions were all in Union County.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
