ROCKINGHAM — A crash course in weight lifting for the future wave of Richmond Raider football is set to begin next week.

Head coach Brad Denson and the Raider football program announced its Rookie Lifting Camp, a new initiative aimed at getting younger players acclimated to the rigor of high school football.

Open to rising freshmen who plan to play football at Richmond, the four-day camp will be held from Monday, June 1, through Friday, June 4, in the Raiders’ weightroom.

Each daily session will start at 8 a.m. and conclude at 10 a.m. Denson is asking players to be in the weightroom no later than 7:55 a.m.

Lifters should wear t-shirts, workout shorts and athletic shoes. Denson said players shouldn’t wear anything “red, blue, orange, pink, etc.”

As Denson prepares for his third season at the helm of the program, he said the new camp is geared toward introducing new players to the ways and expectations of Raider football.

“We’re a proud program and we want these new young guys to see that from the start,” Denson said. “We want to show them the Raider way, which is doing everything the right way, all the way down to the smallest detail.

“High school football is a lot more intensive than what these new guys are used to, so we want to introduce them to that rigor and show them how Raiders get to work ahead of the new season.

“We’re excited to host these freshmen and look forward to getting them situated in the weightroom,” Denson added.

Drop off and pick up of all rising freshman lifters will be in the bus parking lot adjacent to the gym and weight room.
