Registration now open for July sessions

ROCKINGHAM — Two of the more recently successful athletic programs at Richmond Senior High School will host a youth summer camp in July.

Announced this week, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ basketball programs will join together for the third straight year to put on a co-ed basketball camp.

Led by eight-year head coaching veteran Donald Pettigrew and first-year head coach Taneika Reader, the Raiders and Lady Raiders will hold a four-day camp from Tuesday, July 22, through Friday, July 25.

Open to boys and girls, the camp will be split into two sections each day. Using Aug. 1 as the cutoff date, rising third through fifth graders will participate in a morning session, followed by rising sixth through ninth graders in the afternoon.

Each daily session will be four hours. Elementary-aged campers will go from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and middle school and high school freshman campers will workout from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The registration fee this year is $65 per camper. There are three payment options: cash, check (made out to the attention of Richmond Senior High School basketball) or a GoFan ticket that includes an additional $4.25 processing fee.

Pettigrew and Reader shared that current and former Raider and Lady Raider basketball players will be on hand to assist campers with their development. The goals of the camp are to “improve your basketball skills, make new friends and learn valuable life lessons.”

The Lady Raiders have made it to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs in each of the past two seasons, while the Raiders went to the NCHSAA 4A state championship in 2023 and returned to the regional championship in 2024.

Last summer, more than 70 total campers attended the elementary and middle school sessions. Both Pettigrew and Reader hope to see that number grow this summer.

Pre-registration is now open for all age groups. Those who pre-register will receive a camp t-shirt.
