ROCKINGHAM — An annual summer tradition will continue for the Richmond Senior High School cheerleading program under the direction of a new head coach.

Cassie Tyler, who was named Richmond’s head cheerleading coach in February, is jumping in feet first to her new role by hosting the cheerleading program’s summer development camp in July.

Registration for the four-day camp is now open. Richmond will host campers ages 3-15 starting Monday, July 28 through Thursday, July 31 in the school’s gymnasium.

Each daily session will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 12 p.m. Thursday’s final day of camp will see all age groups perform their newly learned routines in front of a live audience beginning at 10 a.m.

The cost per camper is $65. Payments can be made using GoFan, which adds an additional $4.25 procession fee.

“We’re thrilled to announce Raider cheer camp is happening this summer,” Tyler said in a Facebook post. “And it’s going to be full of energy, excitement and spirit.

“Whether you’re new to cheer or ready to sharpen your skills, this camp is perfect for athletes of all levels,” the post continued. “We’ll be focusing on the fundamentals of cheerleading with plenty of fun, games and skill-building packed into every day.”

Tyler was also adamant about Richmond County’s four middle schools being invited to attend camp.

Programs from Cordova, Ellerbe, Hamlet and Rockingham middle schools will have the opportunity to learn new skills and participate in a middle school spirit competition on the final day of camp.

One of the largest annual summer camps hosted by the high school alongside soccer camp, last year’s cheer camp participation reached 115 campers.

The Raider cheerleading program held tryouts for the upcoming school year last month. Members of the newly selected varsity and junior varsity teams will be involved with hands-on instruction during camp.

“Our Raider cheerleaders can’t wait to share their passion for cheerleading with you and the community,” Tyler posted on Facebook.
