WOMEN’S CLINIC A SUCCESS BY RAIDERS FOOTBALL

ROCKINGHAM - On the weekend leading into the official start of spring practice for the Richmond Senior High School football team, head coach Bryan Till and company hosted a women’s clinic on Saturday morning.

Not only was it the Saturday before rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders will hit the field for their first taste of the 2018 season, it was also the day before Mother’s Day. And it was the perfect time, according to Till, to invite the influential women in his players’ lives into the locker room.

“The goal of this clinic is to get the guys to invite and spend time with their mom,” Till commented to ROSports before the event was held. “I wanted the moms to see what goes on behind the scenes, and I wanted everyone to appreciate one another.”

Those who participated were invited into the locker room for an all-access experience, something Till noted that not many non-football players or coaches ever really get to see. After a tour of Richmond’s locker room and facilities, the Raider moms went through what Till called a “basic football introduction.”

With help from their players, the women in attendance were taught the basic rules and positioning of football. Things even got interactive when they got to try on helmets and shoulder pads to get the full effect of game day preparation.

Mary Goodwin, whose son is rising senior punter Kyle Goodwin, shared her thoughts on the morning spent with the Raiders football program.

“I was impressed that Coach Till had the desire to ensure that the Raider moms were on an even playing field or higher with the dads regarding high school football knowledge,” Goodwin said. “He truly thinks of the boys as a part of his family and it’s evident by how invested he is in the success of his ‘family’ on and off the field.

“I have always loved football and had a decent knowledge of the game, but still learned a thing or two from Coach Till,” she added. “But my true reason for going was to spend time with Kyle and let him know I’m interested in his activities and support him on and off the field. I will always be his biggest fan!”

Till said he hopes to make this a regular event for the program.
