Registration open for June camps

ROCKINGHAM — Two more athletic programs at Richmond Senior High School have opened registration for summer development camps.

Richmond’s tennis program, which has a boys and girls team, along with the Lady Raider softball program are looking to strengthen local talent in June.

The focus of both camps will be to introduce fundamentals of each sport to campers, all while developing skills and having fun.

Following the success of last year’s camp, head tennis coach Jessica Covington is bringing instruction back for the second straight summer.

Raider tennis camp will be a three-day program from June 11 through June 13. Each session will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Camp is open to any boy or girl interested who is at least eight years old.

The cost per camper is $75 and includes a t-shirt. If a family has multiple children participating, the price of the second sibling drops to $65.

Covington said “beginners are welcomed and encouraged.” She hopes that the camp will continue to grow the sport locally, as well as lead to more players at Richmond.

Tennis shoes are required for camp. Tennis rackets will also be provided upon request.

Tom Sweitzer, a USPTA pro from Moore County, will also return for a second time to assist campers. Covington, along with current members of the boys’ and girls’ programs, will also help with instruction.

Payment can be made by sending a check to Richmond Senior to the attention of Jessica Covington. She can be reached at jessicacovington@richmond.k12.nc.us.

Wilson excited to host first softball camp

Caroline Wilson finished her first season as the head coach of the Richmond softball team this spring and is already looking toward building up the future.

The Lady Raiders will host their inaugural summer camp in two sessions, similar to the Raider baseball team.

First will be the Little Raiders camp from June 11 through June 13. Open to rising first through fifth graders, the camp will operate each day from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Between June 16 and June 18, the Middle Schoolers camp will be held. Following the same schedule, this camp is open to all Richmond County softball players who are rising sixth through eighth graders.

The Little Raiders camp will introduce campers to the basics of the sport, while the older group will fine-tune instruction to better prepare players for the middle and high school levels.

Current Lady Raider softball players, along with Wilson and assistant coach Lauren Brewer will lead instruction of both camps.

Both softball camps are $69.75 per camper and the price includes a camp t-shirt. Wilson said those who pre-register by June 1 will receive a $10 discount.

Payment can be done online or a check can be sent to Richmond Senior to the attention of Caroline Wilson. Questions can be sent to her at carolinewilson@richmond.k12.nc.us.
