RSHS track and field teams secure 16 top-10 finishes at Queen City Relays

CHARLOTTE — Hundreds of track and field student-athletes from around the state competed at the Queen City Relays at Myers Park High School on Saturday.

With 30 schools represented, along with an unattached division, Richmond Senior High School had several runners, jumpers and throwers in the mix.

Lady Raiders win 4x100-meter hurdle shuttle relay

The Lady Raiders competed in 10 different events, securing a total of nine different top-10 placements.

Their best finish was a victory in the 4x100-meter hurdle shuttle relay with a time of 1:15.98.

Adding to that performance were three second-place marks. The 4x100-meter relay team earned second with a final time of 51.13 seconds, trailing winner Myers Park by 0.70 seconds.

The 4x200-meter relay team also impressed as the runner-up, completing the race in 1:49.28. Just ahead of Richmond was Palisades High School (1:47.73).

Shadea Harrison was the lone single event second-place finisher for Richmond. Competing in the discus, Harrison recorded her longest throw at 99 feet even. Kate Stajos of Charlotte Country Day School won the event (108 feet, 5 inches).

In the long jump, Akeya Harrison placed fourth out of 16 performers. Her mark of 15 feet, 9 inches was just eight inches from breaking into the top three.

Rounding out the top-five spots in their respective events were Isis Covington in the 100-meter dash (13.15 seconds) and Honesty Horne in the shot put (29 feet, 1 inch). 

Other top-10 finishes were Akeya Harrison (7th, 100-meter dash) and Ella Parker (10th, shot put).

Raiders secure seven top-10 finishes

It was tougher sledding for the Raider track and field team on Saturday, which managed to secure seven top-10 marks during the invitational.

Like their Lady Raider counterparts, the Raiders’ best finish on the day was in the 4x110-meter hurdle shuttle relay. Placing third overall, Richmond completed the race in 1:05.67, just 1.33 seconds behind winner Providence Day School.

The Raiders competed in 12 events and added a fifth-place mark and two sixth-place results.

Emerson Wall launched himself to the fifth-place spot on the leaderboard in the triple jump, landing at a final distance of 42 feet, 4 inches. 

In the 4x100-meter relay, the Raiders passed the baton around the track in 44.30 seconds for sixth place, a mere 0.98 seconds from finishing in the top three.

Aaron Coleman’s time of 11.46 seconds in the open 100-meter dash was also sixth. Christian Dixon (Mallard Creek) won the event in 10.74 seconds.

Also included in the top-10 finishes were Domonic Tillman (7th, triple jump), the 4x200-meter relay team (10th) and Dillon Veach (10th, 300-meter hurdles).

The Richmond track and field teams will compete once more before spring break on Thursday. They’ll travel to compete against host Southern Lee and Pinecrest. Events will begin at 4:15 p.m.
