ASHEBORO — For the second consecutive weekend, a local wrestling program brought home some hardware as its new season continued to get underway.
Real Wrestlers Real Heroes, a local travel wrestling club coached by Joseph Earl Nicholson, competed in the Eyes on the Prize 1 wrestling tournament at Asheboro High School.
The event Saturday yielded a total of nine top-three placements for RWRH, which were spread out over high school, middle school and elementary school boys and girls.
RWRH brought home two first-place finishes, four runner-up medals and three third-place results.
Both winners wrestled in the ninth-grade tournament – Jafourtae Bridges (145-pounds) and Seth Cox (220-pounds).
The program’s four second-place medals came across all age groups. High school junior Konner Gardner, a regional qualifier with Richmond Senior High School’s program, finished second in the 175-pound bracket.
Other second-place results were turned in by high school sophomore Gabbi Geiger (114-pounds), also a RSHS regional qualifier, middle schooler Isaac Nunley (152-pounds) and elementary wrestler Nicklaus Whitley (85-pounds).
Coming in third place were high schooler Jacob Hall (165-pounds), Lyric Bingham (114-pounds, girls’ division) and Trip Dunn (115-pounds, elementary bracket).
“I want to give special recognition to Isaac Nunley, who recently returned to club wrestling after nearly a three-year battle with cancer,” Nicholson shared. “His return to the mat is an inspiring moment for the entire RWRH program.”
Nicholson added that “the team continues to show improvement each week and is looking forward to its next competition.”
RWRH will return to the mat Saturday, March 21, at Trinity High School.
