LAURINBURG — Finding the back of the net was no problem for the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team Tuesday.
Making the trip east to Scotland High School, the Lady Raiders pelted the net to win the Sandhills Athletic Conference match 9-0.
Scoring four goals in the first half, Richmond tallied five more goals in the final 40 minutes to put the mercy rule into effect.
Two players scored two goals each, while five other Lady Raiders scored one goal apiece.
Netting first-half goals were sophomore Mariana Gonzalez, senior Ashly Gonzalez, senior Yarely Vargas and junior Makayla Brown.
Adding second-half tallies to keep Scotland winless on the season were sophomore Kellie Gomez, freshman Erin Drumwright (2), freshman Mavery Hooks and Mariana Gonzalez.
“It was good that everyone got some playing time tonight,” head coach Chris Larsen said. “This was a confidence booster for us, especially since we haven’t been able to score as frequently as we would like this season.
“The biggest takeaway tonight was that a lot of girls were able to score their first varsity goal. I’m happy for Kellie, Erin and Mavery for stepping up and scoring. Makayla got her second goal of the season and that will hopefully keep her going.
“Games like tonight are a chance for us to work on some of our techniques,” he added. “Even though I thought we could have played better in some areas, we got the win and that’s the important thing.”
Credited with one assist each were Hooks, senior Hanna Smith and sophomore Colbie Covington.
Senior goalkeeper Sa’Quanna Bostic played the majority of the night in net to record the shutout. Playing part of the second half in goal was Gomez.
The Lady Raiders (4-6-1, 2-3 SAC) play their second of three matches this week on the road Wednesday at non-conference Lumberton High School (4-6-1). Action will start at 7 p.m.
